Bad experience
Our arrival experience was disappointing. There was no porter available when we arrived, and another important point for future guests is that taxis cannot drop you directly at the hotel entrance during much of the day because the road is closed to vehicles. We were dropped off some distance away and had to walk with all of our luggage to the hotel. This was extremely inconvenient after travelling. After we called for assistance, the lady at reception did help us with our bags, which was appreciated, but it felt more like a favour than a standard part of the hotel’s hospitality service.
Unfortunately, the problems continued when we reached our room. The air conditioner was not working, and the room was unbearably hot and stuffy. When we reported the issue, we were told that it could only be attended to the following morning. It was only after we lodged a serious complaint through Booking.com that the hotel arranged for maintenance to come and fix the air conditioner that same evening. Had we not escalated the matter, I am not convinced that anything would have been done promptly.
The breakfast experience was mixed. One gentleman working at breakfast was exceptionally friendly, accommodating, and helpful throughout our stay. The staff were also willing to prepare fried eggs for us, which was appreciated. However, there were recurring issues with basic items such as milk, which was frequently finished and had to be repeatedly requested. On our final morning, the experience deteriorated significantly. The lady assisting at breakfast was extremely rude and repeatedly shouted “No English” whenever we asked simple questions. Her attitude was unhelpful and dismissive, which left a very poor final impression.
The cleanliness of the hotel was another major concern. The rooms were dusty, and basic housekeeping standards appeared to be lacking. Cups that were used in the room were never washed or replaced. I used a cup for orange juice on the first day of our stay, and it remained untouched in the room until the day we checked out. The bathroom was particularly disappointing. There was hair inside the soap dispenser, the shower did not appear to be properly cleaned, and there was a persistent foul smell coming from the drains throughout our stay.
To make matters worse, when we checked out and requested assistance with our luggage, the same staff member who had been rude at breakfast entered the room and handled our belongings in a rough and careless manner, throwing and pushing items around while rushing us out. This was not the level of professionalism or hospitality one would expect from a hotel.
Overall, Omiya Hotel may be suitable for travellers looking for a very budget-friendly option in a central location. However, between the accessibility issues, poor cleanliness, maintenance problems, inconsistent service, and rude treatment from certain staff members, I would not choose to stay here again and would not recommend it to others.
Updated edit: After posting this review, the hotel attempted to lodge a damages claim against me on booking.com in retaliation. They are now claiming that I damaged their bathroom, which is absolutely nonsensical and a complete fabrication. I will be reporting this conduct on all social media platforms.
