Peaceful, quiet, comfortable, and relaxing. A great spot to stay and unwind while visiting natural attractions and creating art in Door County. Wonderful swimming pool and deck/patio area.

Always loved but this year disappointed

My husband and I have been staying at The Ashbrooke for our anniversary since 1999. Missing some years but mostly coming every year. With the previous owner the place was always immaculate. This year we noticed a drastic difference. The pool area was filthy and noticed small changes in the way it was maintained. The breakfast usually had hard boiled eggs and juice and milk and that was no longer offered. We were surprised by young children in the pool. A family must have invited them. The front desk had to ask them to leave as it is still an adults only hotel. My husband had to tell them about the pool and hot tub needing vacuuming and drains dirty (pictures attached) an old hose cart sitting out. Toilet paper too large for the roll. Clock off wall. Was helpful to gauge time while swimming. Cobwebs with bugs around window in room. The price we pay for this property at $1300 for 4 nights we expect perfection. We did book for next year but will be watching reviews over the next several months and base our decision on other reviews. It’s a shame as we never questioned returning before. I hope the current owners will value this review and make some
Changes and have a manager on site who will take more care of this precious property.

Not The Same Ashbrooke

We love this place and have been coming here for years, sometimes twice a year. It’s a really nice place and staff is always very friendly and helpful. This year however we asked for a one day early check out due to “Dangerous” level wildfire smoke. We were told that their policy was full refund for death in the family or medical emergency. Two years ago we experienced this same extreme wild fire smoke, I ended up with bronchitis and my girlfriend has respiratory issues so we weren’t going to go thru that again. Had we stayed things could have escalated in to a health emergency. I guess at the new Ashbrooke you need an ambulance ride to count as a medical emergency. I would’ve liked a one-night refund or credit but would have happily accepted a 50% refund which seemed to me a reasonable compromise instead hearing that it was somehow our fault for not planning ahead for this. We don’t stay here because it’s cheap, it is definitely not, if this was Motel 6 I would have gladly accepted the forfeiture and moved on, I expected better than zero and a condescending comment. We learned thru other guests that the Ashbrooke has been under new ownership since winter and that things were not for the better as we found out. Clearly this ownership group is not a good fit to keep up with the reputation the Ashbrooke has earned from the owners who came before. Chapter 1 of the Resort Owners Handbook is treat people right and they’ll treat you right back and happily return year after year for great memories. Perhaps the new owners need a refresher. Under this new ownership the Ashbrooke has changed from “we hope you had a nice stay” to “we don’t give a rat’s ass about you”. The only reason this is a 2 star review and not a one star is because we’ve had so many good years there. To bad for us, time to start looking for our new favorite resort in Door County.

Not much for the cost.

At $500/ night not worth it.
Room was blah one recliner for two people. Small table for two people. Dresser with a TV on it. King size bed, nothing special, two nightstands, that’s it nothing else.
Wet bar is a sink cabinet with a microwave, mini fridge, single serve coffee maker.
The coffee was Starbucks hotel coffee.
Whirl pool tub went straight onto the carpet.
Don’t waste your money!!!!
Pool and hot tub were ok thats why 2 stars.

Very Disappointing

My wife and I have been staying at the Ashbrooke for the last thirty years. The previous owner, Fred, was always a “hands on” manager who knew his guests by name and was always on sight to help straighten out any issues that arose. Over this past winter, the Ashbrooke was sold to a new owner who apparently spends very little time at the property.
My wife came up for a two night stay in June. We have always enjoyed the well kept look of the property as well as the indoor pool, hot tub, and spacious deck with a fire pit. Much to our surprise, after we checked in and headed down to the pool, we were greeted with a locked door and a sign indicating the pool and hot tub were closed. And since access to the deck is via the pool room, the deck is also off limits.
Apparently the chemicals in the pool and hot tub did not meet State of Wisconsin standards. The system had to be shut down until it could be resolved. This isn’t something that happened the day we checked in but rather some time ago.
Why the state certification wasn’t done prior to the hotel opening at the beginning of May is hard to understand. And why there isn’t any notification of these amenities being unusable on the Ashbrooke web page and at the front desk during check in is completely unacceptable.
We are scheduled to come back next month with two other couples. We are already looking for alternative places to stay.

We understand your disappointment regarding the closure of the pool, hot tub, and deck area during your recent stay. We are also disappointed by the situation and hope to shed light on what happened.
To provide some context, Wisconsin implemented new pool safety requirements in September 2025 while the property was under its previous ownership. This requirement specifically required Cyanuric acid to not be used in the pool system, which was done by the previous owners. When we acquired the hotel over the winter, we were not made aware that the property was not compliant with these new requirements. During our spring inspection, we learned that modifications would be required before the facilities could reopen, thus also surprised.
While this situation originated before our ownership, we recognize that it impacted your stay, and for that we sincerely apologize. Since discovering the issue, we have been working closely with state inspectors and contractors to complete the required improvements and restore these amenities as quickly as possible.
We appreciate your feedback regarding guest communication and are continually working to improve how we communicate temporary amenity closures.
We value the many guests who, like you, have supported The Ashbrooke for decades, and we hope you will consider giving us another opportunity in the future.
