Lovely location but small room

Beautiful location, easy free parking, lovely reception area.
We paid £154 for a double room but it was very small, hardly any space either side of the bed.
Complimentary water would have been a nice touch.
Breakfast good but no poached egg option.
Reception guy very helpful and polite.

Ruined by food…

The hotel itself is absolutely beautiful. From the moment you arrive, it feels more like staying in a National Trust heritage property than a normal hotel. The building, grounds and surrounding walks are stunning, and there is so much character everywhere you look.
Our room was fantastic (Room 3), comfortable and very nicely presented. The only issue we had with the room was that the shower wasn’t functioning to the standard I would expect from a hotel of this quality. It wasn’t enough to spoil our stay, but it definitely needs some attention.
Where the hotel really fell short for us was breakfast. Considering the quality and surroundings of the hotel, I expected breakfast to be considerably better. Unfortunately, it felt much more like a basic Travelodge-style breakfast than something you would expect from a hotel of this standard. The coffee in particular wasn’t very good, and the breakfast service was quite poor.
On our first evening the hotel was extremely busy with what appeared to be a large event or wedding. I completely appreciate that hotels get busy, but unfortunately the staff seemed overwhelmed and struggled to cope with the number of guests. Service suffered quite noticeably as a result.
That said, I don’t want the negatives to overshadow what is a genuinely beautiful hotel. The building and grounds are exceptional, the rooms are lovely, and walking around the estate was one of the highlights of our stay.
With some improvements to the breakfast, coffee and service during busy periods, this could be an outstanding hotel. The surroundings already give it something very special, it just needs the food and service to consistently match the standard of the property.

Don’t eat here

I have physio here, and while I had my appt over lunchtime and was starving (finished at 13:30) I thought I’d quickly grab some food. Some sourdough and a side salad of ceaser salad so nice and quick before I head back to work, 45 mins later it gets brought to me and the waiter apologised he ordered one of the wrong items so that will be 1-2 mins (no problem), 10 mins later came and told me it will be another 5 mins (for some bread!) I’ve got to rush back to work so I can’t wait an hour/ over an hour for some sour dough and a side salad.
So not only did I not get my money back, I didn’t get my lunch either. An hour for bread and a side salad was a joke.

A beautiful building with gorgeous grounds, the hotel is as good in the inside. The restaurant food was well above average, if pricey, and a nice bar menu too. Only blot was the dirt under the tea tray on the desk in the room which looked like it hadn’t been moved for weeks

Over priced, awful experience

Hepburn rooms are OK however we were supplied with 1 set of towels, TV didn't work, sink drained very slowly and the room was above the gym and was noisy late evening. On our way to dinner we notified reception, they offered an alternative room but we were meeting others and had already unpacked. Best they could do was provide more towels.
I ordered a £45 sirloin steak at dinner, at this price I expect the steak to be exceptional but it fell way short of my expectation. Mentioned to the Matre de that the quality of the meat was poor, though the cooking of medium rare was good.
At breakfast, which we added via the hotels link c/o booking.com for £12.50 was charged at the hotel price of £19.50 pp. No movement as we could not provide proof of adding.
Despite discussing this with reception who were unbending to our complaint, no manager was available to meet with us to discuss. We asked for an itemised bill which could not be printed off. We were told this would be forwarded to us by email but nothing received to date. We were also advised a manager would contact us, but no contact to date.
I would not recommend this hotel or darken their doorstep ever again. Very shoddy operation in my view.
