A Wonderful Home Stay Experience

My stay at the home stay accommodation in Gal Oya was simply fantastic! Not only was the atmosphere warm and inviting, but the host went above and beyond to ensure my comfort. I was treated to delicious meals for lunch, dinner, and breakfast, making me feel right at home. If you're planning to visit Gal Oya National Park, I highly recommend this place for a truly authentic experience. It's the perfect retreat after a day of exploring the stunning wildlife and landscapes of the area.

A pretty little villa in a region where hotels are overpriced

A beautiful guest house in a pretty village. For a reasonable price, the family offers a quality welcome, 6900 SLR (20€) in a double room and breakfast.
The rooms and bathrooms are small, clean, minimally furnished, due to lack of space. The linen is clean. Air conditioning, fan, bottled water.
The dining room and lounge area feel like home. The breakfasts are generous.
Dhammika Saman, the father, runs the guest house with his son Charitha, Anusha the mother is an astrologer and spiritual guide, she consults most of the people in the area. The Chamatka girl is studying.
The villa has its own boat for Senanayake Samudraya safaris.
Although the majority of tourists come to the region to visit Gal Oya National Park, we often talk about doing a boat safari to observe elephants swimming from island to island (elephants crossing). It's a myth. It happens, but so rarely that we have very little chance of witnessing it.
The safari essentially consists of walking along the banks of the reservoir to observe crocodiles, a few elephants, drinking deer and birds.
On the other hand, I prefer Charitha Rest to the hotels in Amapara (expensive and not always interesting) to explore the region and discover Sri Lanka in depth.
The surroundings, the villages, daily life have not yet been disfigured by tourism. There are interesting things to see like the Buddhangala Raja Maha Viharaya or Buddhangala Rock Hermitage where you can meet meditating monks (they meditate in caves or in the forest) who are much less paunchy than the monks we usually see, l The place is very photogenic.
There is the Japanese Peace Pagoda of Ampara. There are also lots of small crafts to discover, such as traditional culinary pottery, weaving palm leaves and sisal for rugs and baskets, and making curd. Many families share a moment and their know-how with pleasure.

Friendly, welcoming homestay in an unspoilt but interesting part of Sri Lanka

We received a warm welcome and really appreciated the organised trips. Charitha was very conscientious and considerate - he quickly organised an excellent boat safari and mountain trek. He also took us to the nearby dam to view the waterfall. We recommend this place if you are looking to experience an exclusive safari experience and quiet, rural location. Plus the home cooking was tasty. The bedroom is simply furnished and the shower was cold but we were comfortable there for a couple of nights.

Excellent place to stay when you are in Inginiyagala near Senanayaka samudraya & Gal oya national park

It was a great home stay experience❤️ we were welcomed by the daughter and the grandmother of the family even though a power cut of the area that day they managed to welcome us with a warm cup of Tea emergency lamp was provided . Dinner was super delicious made by mother of the family Charitha explained about the next day boat safari and given all the necessary informations, as we requested they given the morning tea with a light breakfast on one of the islands @ senanayaka samudraya
Nothing to complain everything in Charitha Rest was superb. We highly recommend this place

An unforgettable tour in Gal-Oya

I went with two of my friends to Iginiyagala and stayed at Charitha Rest from 10th July to 13th July 2023. The hospitality at Charitha Rest was awesome! The food was tasty, the place was clean and all our needs were attended to promptly. We visited Rajagala, an ancient monastery dating back to pre-Christian era, during our 2nd day at Charitha Rest. It was 45 km away from that location. On the following day, Charitha arranged a Jeep and an expert wild life guide called Asanga for us to visit Nilgala, a bird and wild life sanctuary about 30 km away. On the same day in the evening, Charitha booked a boat tour for us in the Galoya Reservoir, which was another unforgettable trip. I have no words to describe the effort this young man took to make our stay so memorable and wonderful. He was always with a winsome smile and promptly attended to all our requests.
