Very special to experience

Very special to stay one night. Breakfast and dinner are included (Vegetarian) and in the evening you will meditate. In the morning you will witness the morning prayer at 7 am and after breakfast there is a ceremony to pray for your wishes. Really special all of them. I can highly recommend it

Wonderful experience

There are many shokubos in Koyasan. If you don't understand Japanese, you could book through one through the shokubo association and they will just randomly assign one to you or one of those travel hotel websites (with limited selections). I stumbled upon Komyo-in website which has an OK english translation page and let me book direct. Most of the reviews are on google and i think it deserves one here.
Communication: Mostly through google translate and it worked fine. The hospitality was great. Everything was well organised. Nothing was too much of a hassle. I stayed here for 2 nights. I wanted to do the cemetery night tour and the monk told me that he would wait for me and not lock the door if i returned pass the curfew hrs (9pm). I didn't think it would be a problem but they didn't want me to worry.
Location: The temple is located just behind the Eko-in, where the night tour starts. It is also located near the bus-stop if you are coming from the koyasan cable station.
Food: I ordered the breakfast and dinner on both nights. There were delicious and adequate for a standard portion. They have the larger portion selection.
Room: Spacious as a solo traveler. They provided me a gas heater and it was warm enough when i was in the room. Tea and cookies were complimentary. Clearly, you have to utilise the public bath and toilet. Bath time was given for each gender.
Atmosphere: It might be like the big temple but i really quite liked the small temple setting. I also participated the morning ritual one morning.
Highly recommended.

A short walk next to Ekoin. People are warm and helpful. Big and clean room with heater. Big public bath but need to reserve time. They have fire goma ritual everyday and provide sutra writing for free. Very recommended!

Book through the temple you want!!

We booked a temple stay through the Koyasan Association. Apparently they try to distribute guests evenly amoang temples. The rates are similar no matter the temple, and we ended up at this ancient temple, Komyoin. The location was good. We arrived early evening to find one lone monk, young and very nervous, waiting to check us in. He had a few words of English, but our Japanese was slightly better, so we reverted, seeing that he was under stress. He showed us to our room, which was (of course) old, in Chinese style, pleasant enough. We left our luggage and went out on the town. On return at dinnertime, the same silence prevailed and again the lone monk nervously brought our dinner (which we think he had cooked, also under stress). It was shojin ryori, the monks' food, but undistinguished, though edible. After dinner it was bath time. Son went first, carrying his pile of towels and other accoutrements. He reappeared to report that the men's bath was dark and cold. I looked up the lone monk to ask and he explained that only the women's bath was open, to both genders. Son disappears. Son reappears several minutes later, wearing a small towel around his waist and no robe. Says he had to sneak past the monk as he was embarrassed. I go back to lone monk and report that there are no yukata, or cotton robes. He rushes to supploy them, on the run. We each have a pleasant bath, one by one in the ladies' side. We receive instructions for the next morning's sutra ceremony. We arrive at the appointed hour (4:30?). To our amazement, in that huge temple, there is still only one monk (the same one), age around 21, who must do all the chanting alone, in front of two guests. We were able to leave our luggage that morning while we went to Okunoin. When we returned, he had visitors, but duly checked us out.
All in all, it was a lonely experience. I asked son at dinner which friend he might have wnated to be there, and chose one for myself. But the two of us seldom have the opportunity to dine together, so we made the best of it. It might have helped if there had been a temple tour, as some of the abandoned buildings looked interesting, though it might have been asking too much of one lone and possibly lonely monk.

Amazing experience in a buddhist monastery

The rooms are very rustic, with shared bathrooms and toilets. But vegetarian food is excellent, dinner and breakfast.
Do not miss the morning service before breakfast, it is a unique opportunity to see monks praying.
Dining room was beautifully decorated.
Monks are very nice and helpful, but nobody spoke english
