The opposite of hospitality
Unfortunately, our stay at Quartier Libre was one of the most disappointing parts of our time in Paris.
First, the **location of our room was terrible**. We were on the first floor overlooking a street that was busy throughout the day and night, with frequent sirens and cigarette smoke coming up from people smoking on the street. While the apartment itself was tidy, it was quite small, and there was also a very strange and uncomfortable window that looked directly into our bathroom.
Our first night's sleep was terrible because of the noise, which left us exhausted and rushed the following morning. We arrived for breakfast **three minutes late**. There was still plenty of food out and other guests were still sitting and eating, yet the staff rigidly refused to allow us to have breakfast. There was no attempt at hospitality or accommodation whatsoever.
Then began what became an almost comical, multi-day saga over **coffee pods**. There were three of us staying in the apartment, yet we repeatedly could not get enough coffee pods for everyone. What should have been an incredibly simple request turned into repeated interactions with staff members who were dismissive and, at times, downright rude. This continued throughout our stay rather than being resolved the first time we brought it to their attention.
My final communication to the property sums up how frustrated I was by the end of our stay:
> I had one last unfortunate exchange with “Louis” about the absurd stinginess of the coffee pods. Because we did not have any coffee pods the day before, I stopped by reception this evening to request a few more. I was spoken to like a beggar child by “Louis” who rolled his eyes when I requested additional ones. I was told they are a “courtesy” and he would only give me 2. What is the point of a courtesy if there isn’t enough to even cover your stay. “Louis” seemed disgruntled to have to stand up and retrieve them. Between that on-going saga, and the ridiculous rigidity of the staff when we were 3 minutes late for breakfast and told no, it really showed the worst of this city. Never again.
The frustrating thing is that several of these problems were completely avoidable. The apartment was tidy, and we could have overlooked the small size and even some of the street noise. What ultimately made the experience so unpleasant was the **lack of hospitality**. Something as minor as providing enough coffee for three registered guests should never become an ongoing issue, and turning away paying guests who are three minutes late for breakfast while the food is still out and others are still eating is unnecessarily rigid.
For us, the combination of the noisy first-floor location, poor sleep, lack of privacy in the bathroom, and consistently unpleasant interactions with staff made this a **one-star experience**.
We would not stay at Quartier Libre again.

We loved our stay here! Great AC, hot water, and elevators. Close to the metro and about a 20 minute walk to Notre-Dame. It felt like a hotel/airbnb! Front desk was helpful. Not a lot of space for bags but we made it work.

I booked this hotel last minute because my other hotel was so terrible. This hotel redeemed my faith in Paris! The location, staff, cleanliness, decor were all great! I probably have 10 French words and it was no problem communicating with the staff. They were so helpful.

The location and apartment was perfect. It made our trip exceptional. Everything was just right, size, clean, good water pressure, cold fridge, comfy bed,etc. Zero complaints!!!
