Basic accommodation with unpretentious and high quality regional food.

We enjoyed our 2 night stay. The room was basic but functional. The emphasis was on the quality dining. Nothing fancy, just good regional cuisine: e.g. a beef ragout; a savoury creme brulee made from the local Abondance cheese, fresh trout and a wonderful tarte of myrtilles. Served outside by the rushing river when when weather was warm enough, otherwise inside in a cosy alpine restaurant. It is authentic "France profonde"

Disappointing overall and breakfast very poor

We stayed here for to nights as part of a walking holiday. The room was fine - good shower and balcony with a view over the river. Dinner the first night was dreadful; service slow, and like the previous reviewer we had a pensionnaire arrangement. Having been told the menu in advance and ordered wine accordingly, the waiter brought a different dinner entirely without warning or consultation unfortunately consisting of an ingredient to which I am severely allergic. They left one meal for my husband and then eventually brought me another dish but not of a comparable standard. Dessert was equally poor - semi-fermented fruit salad with a squirt of cream - clearly from a can.
We complained and the following evening the dinner improved immeasurably and was perfectly fine.
The breakfast was as disappointing as slowinfastout suggests - a mirror of our experience. At no time were we offered an apology other than by default.
Staff appeared not to value such business which makes us wonder why they signed up to such a deal.

Good basic hotel but spoiled by breakfast

We started in Hotel de l'Abbaye for two nights as part of a walking holiday. The room was quite nice, very traditional with a small balcony. The shower was good but the loo seat fell off a couple of times. We ate dinner on the Terrace by the river and the food was very good but a little too salty for our tastes. We asked to upgrade our dinner package from the 28euro menu we had been given as part of our holiday, to the 32euro menu. The extra choice meant my wife's gluten free needs were better met and the food was very good. The down side was I was charged an extra 20euros for the 2x4euro price difference.
The only other downside was the breakfast; three pastries on your plate, orange juice and a choice of tea or coffee. No GF option, the croissant and the pain au chocolate were under baked and still soggy in the middle on both days.
So not a bad hotel and maybe we were just a bit unfortunate.

A lovely hotel in a lovely village

We had 2 nights here as part of a hiking holiday. Abondance is a charming village and this is a charming hotel. We had a spacious comfortable room with a superb wet room. The weather was lovely and we had dinner both nights on the terrace beside the river. The food was excellent. Breakfast was delicious too with delicious pastries, fresh bread coffee and orange juice. We will be back.

family ski trip

Excellent accomodation with jacuzzi sauna and family rooms. Excellent food and very friendly staff. About 10 minutes to small ski area but great for families, and bus stop very close for other ski areas.
