A quiet bed and breakfast Inn, with friendly staff. Not in town, but close enough to be economically ideal. It has a family atmosphere, and is a nice stay for the price.

Nice stay at the inn
We stayed for one night when visiting Digby. Very friendly and the room was nice. They give you a nice breakfast which is included and that was a nice touch. Ample parking at no cost. We’re glad we stayed there and we would stay there again.

Disappointing
We recently stayed at this inn and left with very mixed feelings, primarily due to the management's approach to hospitality. We accidentally arrived earlier than the official check-in time (our mistake). However, the owner handled this with a total lack of courtesy. He literally poked his head around the door and virtually shooed us off the doorstep, making us feel incredibly unwelcome from the very start. This unwelcoming vibe continued throughout the property, which is filled with numerous signs, rules, and regulations. It felt excessive and made us feel uncomfortable, as if guests are assumed to be incapable of behaving suitably. The rigidness extended to breakfast. It is a strict set menu with absolutely no flexibility. I asked for scrambled eggs as I wanted something light, but they were unable to deviate from the set plate. As a result, I ended up just having a yogurt. Furthermore, the property itself feels very tired, unloved, and is in need of a full renovation. On a positive note, the bed was very clean and comfortable, ensuring a good night's sleep. Additionally, the lady from Kent who served us was incredibly kind, warm, and provided the pleasant customer service we had hoped to receive from the management. We suggest that hospitality may not be the owners forte! However if you love Basil Fawlty this may be the place for you!

Thank you for sharing your feedback. We are genuinely sorry that your arrival left you feeling unwelcome. You arrived before our published check-in time during what is normally a short period of rest for the owners between morning operations and afternoon check-in. On this particular day, the owner you encountered had already been working since early morning and was exhausted. While that may help explain why his response came across as abrupt, it does not excuse making a guest feel unwelcome, and for that we sincerely apologize.
Our stated check-in time serves an important purpose. It allows our team adequate time to clean, prepare, and inspect each room so it is ready for arriving guests. As a small, owner-operated inn, it also provides the owners - whose working days frequently run from 6:00 a.m. until 10:00 p.m. - with a necessary period of rest between morning operations and afternoon check-in. We therefore genuinely appreciate guests respecting our published arrival times.
We are, however, surprised by some of the other descriptions in this review, as they do not accurately reflect the experience or options we provide at The Harbourview Inn.
In particular, we would like to clarify our breakfast service. At check-in, we specifically ask every guest about dietary restrictions and preferences so that we can prepare appropriately for breakfast the following morning. We regularly accommodate vegetarian, vegan, and glute-free requirements, as well as other dietary needs when they are communicated to us, going so far as to have dedicated gluten -free equipment in our commercial kitchen. If a dietary restriction or preference is not mentioned when we ask, unfortunately, we have no way of knowing about it in advance.
While we serve a featured, hot breakfast each morning, that is not the only food available. We also offer alternatives including pancakes, various toasts, cereal, oatmeal, yogurt, and fresh fruit. You may even alter the quantities on your plate, or eliminate items altogether. We are therefore surprised by the suggestion that breakfast is offered with "absolutely no flexibility".
The lovely "lady from Kent' whom you so kindly mentioned has, in fact, been part of The Harbourview Inn for 18 years. She is exceptionally experienced at what she does and is well known for making our guests feel welcome and ensuring that they understand the choices available to them. We greatly appreciated your kind words about her, and they reflect the experience that so many of our guests have had with her over the years.
We were also pleased to hear that you found your bed very clean and comfortable, and you enjoyed a good night's sleep.
We would also like to address the comment that the inn is "in need of refurbishment." The Harbourview Inn is a 127-year-old historic property, and we have been its owners for only two years. Restoring and modernizing a building of this age, while preserving its character is necessarily an ongoing process, but it is one to which we have devoted an extraordinary amount of work since taking ownership.
During this past winter alone, we worked throughout the entire off-season, from closing until reopening, on substantial improvements to the property. We installed a new 120,000 BTU propane heating system and insulated areas of the inn for the first time in its 127-year history. We rebuilt the front steps, repainted the lobby, and completely re-walled and repainted several areas of the building.
We also created our Speakeasy Lounge from the ground up, transforming the space into an entirely new guest amenity. This involved the construction and finishing of the room itself, the installation of a full bar, plumbing, and running water, along with everything required to turn the space into the welcoming lounge our guests can enjoy today.
We have also invested in the grounds and in the future of the property by establishing a new fruit orchard and planting berry producing plants. These are improvements that will mature over the coming years and enhance both the property and what we are able to offer our guests. To us, caring for The Harbourview Inn isn't simply about renovating the inside of the building; it means thoughtfully developing and caring for the entire property for the future.
Some of our largest investments are improvements a guest would never actually see. We completely rebuilt our kitchen back to the studs, including the installation of stainless-steel work surfaces to meet the high standard of hygiene we expect. We replaced five individual refrigerators with commercial walk-in refrigeration and five freezers with a commercial-sized freezer. We also undertook significant upgrades to the property's well and water system to help ensure a clean, reliable water supply for our guests. These are substantial infrastructure improvements that may not change the appearance of a guest room, but they are an essential part of responsibly maintaining and modernizing a 127-year-old inn.
There is, of course, still more we intend to do. An inn of this age cannot - and in our view, should not - be stripped of its history and transformed overnight. In the two years that we have owned The Harbourview Inn, however, an enormous amount has already been accomplished, and that work continues.
We absolutely respect that decor and aesthetics are subjective, and what feels charming, historic and full of character to one guest may feel dated to another. The Harbourview Inn is a 127-year-old historic inn, and that history is an important part of what we offer.
Our goal has never been to turn it into a modern, standardized hotel, nor would we want to erase its character in the process of improving it.
Guests who prefer the uniform finishes, contemporary design, and predictability of a modern chain hotel may simply find that type of accommodation better suited to their tastes. Guests who choose a historic country inn, however, can reasonably expect some of the quirks, character and architectural history that come with a building that has been welcoming people for well over a century.
What we don't believe is fair is the implication that historic character means the property is being neglected or is simply sitting "in need of refurbishment." Quite the opposite: The Harbourview Inn is undergoing an active, thoughtful and substantial program of restoration and improvement. Our intention is to modernize what matters for comfort, safety, hygiene, and the guest experience, while preserving the history and personality that make this property unique.
We are extremely proud of the progress that has been made in not quite two years, and we have no intention of turning this beautiful old inn into something it was never meant to be.

As for the suggestion that our property is filled with "numerous signs, rules, and regulations", we are somewhat puzzled by that characterization. We take constructive criticism seriously, and we will reflect on the interaction at your arrival and where it could have been handled better. At the same time, when a review makes broader statements about our hospitality, our breakfast service, and the care of our historic property, we feel it is important to provide some context and accurate information for future guests reading it.

2x Queen Room
One night stay in a spacious Double Queen Room on the corner is comfortable with very large windows so there was a bit of a view. (The windows look very old and I assume don't seal very well but we were comfortable with the in room AC.) Friendly staff. Short walk to the community pool down the road. Breakfast of fruit, yogurt and granola, “egg cups”, hashbrowns and toast and was pretty good. Price was reasonable. Other than the pool we didn't explore the property much - We arrived after dinner and watched a World Cup match before taking a short drive in to Digby to walk the waterfront - so we probably didn't experience all it has to offer. Overall i would consider staying again for a similar trip.

A handy location with spotless accommodation.
Great location, easy to find. Looks great from the outside and spotlessly clean inside. Comfy beds. Interiors (bedrooms) are not period but rather dated, there is probably authentic historic fabric which could be uncovered under the vinyl flooring etc, which has the potential to look amazing with the help of an interior designer who understands historic buildings. Staff and service were fantastic though our host seemed annoyed/a little passive aggressive because we asked him to explain the locks more than once. It looks like this is a common complaint on the reviews. The staff at breakfast were super friendly and attentive and even gave the kids extra hash browns. Vegetarian breakfast (egg and potato) was very nice. A good mid- range place to stay.
