Nice clean quiet, least crowded and northern most capital city. Not a whole lot of things to do in the city : a church, a marina, whale & maritime museums, restaurants & shops. Iceland is more for nature lovers : volcanoes, lava rock walls, glaciers, waterfalls, geysers and amazing landscapes.
One of the most amazing stopovers, breathtaking scenery and crisp, clean air. The streets are geothermal my heated so they are not frozen over! I definitely want to go back and spend more time there !
We were wandering around the pretty and chilly Reykjavik our first morning there when, after doing some shopping and grabbing a slice of pizza, we decided we should join a walking tour and hear some history. Our guide was an animated Icelander, who told us history and other stories about notable landmarks in Reykjavik, including where to buy your groceries like the locals, and where to gather when Iceland has a huge upset and qualifies for the World Cup finals. It takes about an hour and you get to hear from a local about the country and the city, tips not included.
Reykjavik is a small, but fun city. The people are friendly and helpful. It's very walkable and the streets are filled with shops that are fun to explore. There's a great art scene and the street art is also pretty awesome. The downtown/historic city center area is great for grabbing a hot dog and walking along the water by the harbor. It's a good place to start and end any visit to Iceland.
