Shallowdale House

Set in 2 acres of hillside gardens in the village of Ampleforth, Shallowdale House is located 5 miles from Helmsley. This award-winning property features a restaurant and lovely views. The individually decorated rooms at Shallowdale House feature a flat-screen TV, tea and coffee-making facilities and a bathroom with luxury toiletries and bathrobes. Free Wi-Fi is included. A traditional breakfast is served daily and evening meals can be requested. You can relax in a spacious and elegant drawing room and in the first-floor library. The house looks onto the surrounding Howardian Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, through large picture windows. Shallowdale House is set on the southern edge of North York Moors National Park, 20 miles north of York. Nearby attractions include Rievaulx Abbey and Castle Howard.

Pleasant stay in beautiful countryside

We stayed for a couple of nights in August. The room was spacious and with beautiful furnishings, and the view from the window was amazing. The whole place felt very homely.
Anton and Phillip were very attentive and looked after us very well. I have no hesitation in recommending this small hotel.

We stayed for four nights at the end of June and felt we got the measure of the place in that time. Indeed, the other couple staying for even longer have apparently been visiting annually for quite a few years, so that's a recommendation in itself! It is also a member of the Wolsey Lodge consortium, which is [usually] a pretty reliable indicator.
Our room would originally have been the master bedroom and very spacious. One nice feature for us was having sliding windows (or a door) on three elevations, meaning we could get plenty of through draft on a warm evening. It is worth noting that although the road is close by there is next-to-no traffic using it and the window could be left open at night with no problem (one of us being particularly sensitive to traffic noise).
Anton's breakfast is made and served to order and cooked to perfection (save for the unwelcome addition of black pepper which was of course revised on request for subsequent days!). Previous reviewers have commented on the excellent evening meals that used to be available on request, but not surprisingly this service is no longer offered (especially as there are quite a few pub restaurants in the area...).
As well as a comfortable bed (which these split mattresses were) and a decent breakfast the most important attribute of any B&B is an affable host, and Phillip in particular is quite charming and only too pleased to help with recommendations as to things to do etc. A nice place to stay!

Delightful stay in a classy home

My wife and I still talk of about our three night stay in Shallowdale. This place has class with generous sizes comfortable rooms with beautiful rural views. The furnishings show impeccable taste by the hosts Anton and Phillip. Then there is the food, great breakfasts and the option of dining in if ordered in advance. Our advice is to take this opportunity as the food quality, preparation and presentation is first class. Possibly the best place we have stayed in after many years of travel.

A peaceful and relaxing stay

My wife and I stayed recently for two nights on a dinner, bed and breakfast basis. Anton and Philip were the perfect hosts, very friendly and knowledgeable about the surrounding area. The room was very peaceful with a lovely view of the extensive gardens and surrounding countryside. The bed was very comfortable and we had two great nights sleep. All the food is excellent (dinner should not be missed if possible). We will return.

First visit to Ampleforth

A delightful guest house with unsurpassed views from all aspects of the house. We were really impressed with every detail of our stay from the tea/coffee making facilities in the bedroom to the delicious breakfast in the mornings (delicious bacon and the best kipper ever). The hosts, Philip and Anton provided a very high standard of service from the moment of arrival to our departure. There were many small thoughtful details such as the chocolates in the bedroom and the tea and cake in the well appointed (and in our case, sunny) garden on arrival. Thank you both!
