A wonderful surprise accommodation. Stay here!
Strahan Backpackers is a hidden gem. Tucked away in a quiet, wooded corner of town, along a trickling stream with a resident platypus, it is a peaceful place to spend a few days. The shared facilities were always clean, and there's plenty of places to lounge outdoors and in, if it's a chilly day. If you happen to take the time to read the walls, you'll leave with nuggets of wisdom from travelers past.
I actually wasn't even supposed to stay at Strahan Backpackers. I had a camping booking next door at the Big4 Holiday Retreat (which also owns Strahan Backpackers). When I arrived around 6 PM, reception was closed, and I had received no information about my campsite or facilities prior to my arrival. There was an emergency number listed on the door, and when I called it, I could hear the phone ringing inside the closed reception. Just as I started to panic, Bumpy (former general manager of Strahan Backpackers) happened to be walking past, and recommended that I go to the backpackers for assistance. Bumpy was my guardian angel that day.
I pulled up to Strahan Backpackers and I found Jeff, the general manager of Strahan Backpackers, a warm, welcoming, pleasant soul, who heard my story, and then gestured to the large grassy area along the stream and said, "pitch your tent anywhere you like, and have a hot shower!" I was so relieved. I don't know what I would have done without Jeff and Bumpy helping me out. I actually did leave a message on the emergency phone at the Big4... and no one ever called me back to find out if I figured everything out alright. In fact, it baffles me that there was no information or follow up whatsoever from the Big4 about my camping booking... but this is about Strahan Backpackers, and not them.
Jeff truly made my stay at Strahan Backpackers wonderful. I am so glad that I camped here instead of at the Big4. It's a beautiful property. And Jeff has great recommendations of things to do in the area. Do yourself a favor and book a few nights here! You won't regret it.

Worst communication and booking system
Booked a cabin confirmed via Booking.com. When we arrived they told us there were no cabins available so they put us in a noisy dorm room. Very poor communication leading up to our stay - we tried to phone the reception numerous times regarding the change of dates to our booking…they never answer their phone and when you do eventually manage to get hold of someone to talk to they are rude and completely unhelpful. When arriving we went to the backpackers reception as one would assume to…we waited there for about half an hour with no-one to help. A bus driver eventually came past and told us we needed to go to the Big4 reception in a different location to check in. Simple things that should have been communicated ahead of time or a simple sign on the door of the backpackers reception could have done the trick. Really bad booking management and check-in experience.

Rude (actually stayed February 2020)
Stayed in this hostel as part of a group tour. On leaving the bus we were basically warned to take the host’s humor with a pinch of salt.
“Greeted” by the owner Bumpy and within the first 20 mins of arriving at the hostel we were ordered into the kitchen and taught how to clean up after ourselves. Bumpy continued to show us around the grounds all the while being condescending and brash.
Throughout our stay Bumpy ordered me to get off my phone (none of his business), he walked into the female toilets while we were in the shower (creep) and most annoying of all kept reminding us he was Irish but couldn’t take the banter when challenged about his “Irish heritage”(we’re Irish).
Overall I would save yourself the headache and not stay here.

Amazing owner - Bumpy and great rates for travellers
Awesome place to stay! You better have some humour because Bumpy (owner) is a funny, humorous, generous, loving and caring guy. 2 of us got a dorm room on Christmas holiday season and it was great. We were planning to camp but the weather turned and we needed shelter. Book a night or couple here, people are friendly and he had great rates for us. Also you can get discount on the Hertiage cruise - Gordon river if you book through Bumpy!

BEST PLACE
I have done a lot of hostels, campings, motels, etc. This place is the BEST, nothing less. The owner Bumpy welcomes you in his "home" in the best way possible, with humor and kindness. He upgraded me without me asking, just because. He understands what it means to travel backpacking. He made me feel welcome. Room, toilets, showers, kitchen...everything was super clean. The bed was comfy with 2 blankets to keep me warm and clean sheets. I wish I could have stayed a few more nights! I highly recommand this place.
