10 years ago this was a picturesque little town with lots of family owned B&Bs and taverns, many in 19-century buildings; a small and hard to reach ski area, with great people speaking a strange even to Bulgarian ears language, a hidden gem. Now it's a concrete jungle, lots of large "modern" hotels, cars and crowds everywhere.. The ski area is probably twice the size while the hotel capacity increased 20-fold so the wait for the lifts can be 2 hours..
If you want to ski (or snowboard) go elsewhere. If you want to see what's left of its rich history, hurry up..
It may still be worth visiting in summer, the mountains are beautiful and quite accessible.

Bansko is a good destination both in the Winter and in the Summer. No matter whether you enjoy skiing or hiking you will have a good and pleasant experience. I have visited in the summer, but have heard from friends who have had a good experience with a skiing trip to the place.
Here is a quick summary of my visit and of course some photos... http://site.chinafinds.com/travel/2006/11/trip-to-bansko-bulgaria-part-1/
